How to Start Networking in 4 Very Simple Steps
You are the average of the 5 people you spend the most time with
And I think that is pretty true to be honest. Based on that I am a cross between my fiance Aidan, my daughter Ruby and the two dogs. As much as I love them all, none of them open any doors in terms of networking so I am forced to look outside of my lovely little comfortable circle
I am a friendly and outgoing creature by nature. For the most part I enjoy meeting new people and social events, but I haven’t always been like that. It is something that I have had to work on over the years. As a head hunter and a business owner I
It is something that I have had to work on over the years. As a head hunter and a business owner I need to put myself out there and reach out to others whether it be to create new business or to find new clients and just to expand my thinking
I recently spoke at an event about the power of building your network and how simply it can be done
Sometimes when we talk about networking we associate it with groups of professionals only at corporate events. We can be intimidated by that or perhaps that it’s not our thing and we don’t want to put ourselves out there in that way but I challenge you to think differently
The benefits of building a network are different for everyone. In my case a strong network enables me to ask questions to other business professionals, gain insight into challenges or solutions they have experienced in their businesses and in others it has opened the doors to wonderful and lasting friendships.
There are several ways to network without making it a huge uncomfortable task
JOIN A LOCAL CLUB
I moved house about two years. I knew no one in our little village at the time and wasn’t sure about how to put myself out there. Funnily enough my neighbour was new too. We had talked over the garden fence many times and one evening I invited Maren and her partner Gary in. Aside from it leading to a great friendship, Maren decided to set up a pilates class. I attend every week and have increased my network, meeting 8 new people and all form the local area who are delighted to be out and conversing with others.
As you know Facebook is full of fantastic groups. There is something for everyone
We have one where likeminded women come together and I am a member of several. In fact I now
collaborate with a lot of women in business thanks to the groups I have joined
THE SCHOOL YARD
I am fortunate enough to be able to collect Ru from school two days a week. It is a great place to expand your circle and meet like-minded women. Asking someone if they fancy a coffee after school drop off might make their day and you might be surprised at what can develop from that growing friendship
DOING SOME CHARITY WORK
This is a great way to meet all sorts of individuals from those who are on the ground giving practical help to others who may be involved through providing financial support. When my dad passed away my mum started working in the local charity store. She made new friends, found her mojo again and really enjoyed the commercial side of running the shop. It expanded her circle of friends and increased the size of her network
These are only 4 simple ways to start networking more organically. They may not build an empire for you but they will enable you to become more confident when meeting new people and show you that opportunity is everywhere
Why not commit today to expanding your network and implement some if not all of the 4 steps I’ve mentioned
Go for it ladies !
